USA Gold Coins

There are many varieties of US gold coins which make a good option in gold. Owning US gold coins has many benefits. There are 2 categories of  US gold coins: bullion coins and numismatic coins.

Gold Bullion Coins

This coin type is usually purchased for its gold content. Two gold bullions from the USA are the Gold American Eagle and the Gold American Buffalo coins. The former was produced in 1986 with 4 available sizes: 1 oz., ½ oz., ¼ oz. and 1/10 oz. This coin type is very affordable on any budget. It is of pure gold with added alloys to give it the hardness and to decrease wear and tear effects so that each coin will have longevity. This gold bullion coin is currently the world’s best-selling, overtaking the other bullion coins in the market such as Kangaroo, Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and Panda coins.

The Gold American Buffalo was produced by the US Mint in 2006, inspired by its counterpart, the Buffalo Nickel. The Nickel was minted between 1913 and 1938. The Gold Buffalo coin has purer gold content than the Gold Eagle without alloys to harden it as per other foreign gold coins standard. But the Gold Buffalo is only available in one size: 1 oz. As gold bullion is plentiful, they are not a collector’s item as of yet.

Gold Numismatic Coins

This type is rarer than the other and gives intrinsic security based on the gold content. These rare US coins were minted between 1795 and 1933 when the US Mint was producing gold coins as currency. Collectors as well as investors are interested in these rare US gold coins; specifically the Mint State and Proof types.

Mint State Gold

The Mint State coins were minted for commercial circulation as per the original intention but never made it into circulation; hence named ‘mint state’. They exist in Mint State grades of 60-70 based on the ANA numerical scale. Many of the US rare gold coins are Mint State gold coins.

Proof Gold

Proof gold are similar in design to Mint State gold except for some major differences like Proof coins were minted for exclusivity; not for circulation. These coins were minted using painstaking techniques performed carefully to produce superb coins through a slow process using greatly polished “planchets” for strikes. Hence there are not many Proof gold coins.

These gold coins are so pristine with clear mirrored surfaces that they are breathtaking samples of works of art.
As these rare gold coins offer not only gold content security, but also high value due to their scarcity, they are typically more favored coins than gold bullion coins.
