Rare Gold Coins in the US

Rare gold coins can  be a form of investment as well as a hobby. The rarity of any gold coin is calculated by its mint mark, year, type, aesthetic appeal and the number of its type minted. Coin connoisseurs and numismatists regard the following coins as rare, precious and even priceless.

Rare Gold Coins

  • 1838 Half Eagle: This rare gold coin was minted in 1838 and the design was given by engraver William Kneass. A left-facing bust of Liberty sporting a headband can be seen on the obverse side of the class head half eagle. The word LIBERTY runs full length from front to back. There are thirteen six-point stars that encircle the head. The bottom has the date centered. The reverse side of the coin shows an eagle with outstretched wings and a shield over its breast. This rare gold coin was valued at around $100,000 in 2009.
  • 1795 Five Dollar Gold Coin: Struck in gold, this 1795 five dollar coin is a rarity. This rare gold coin had an estimated value of $150,000 in 2009. These rare gold coins were produced when the first-ever gold coins were minted in the United States. The obverse of the coin depicts the liberty head turned towards the right with a turban, which was in vogue at the time for women. On the reverse side of the coin is a skinny eagle with a wreath in its beak.
  • 1933 Ten Dollar Gold Coin: This rare gold coin was struck in 1933, with a face value of ten dollars. The value of this gold coin was estimated at $300,000 in 2009. The obverse of the coin depicts the liberty head with an Indian bonnet while the reverse side shows a majestic eagle with ‘In God We Trust’ on its left side.
  • 1880 Four Dollar Gold Coin: This rare gold coin was a part of a two-year experimental type group of gold minted coins. In 1879 about 425 coins were minted and then later 15 more were struck in 1880. Charles E. Barber was their designer. Their value was estimated at $500,000 in 2009.
  • 1839 Ten Dollar Proof: This is an exceptionally rare gold coin as only five samples of this coin are known to exist today. The obverse side shows the Liberty head with a crown that says LIBERTY and the reverse side depicts an eagle with a shield on its breast. However, the inscription ‘In God We Trust’ is not found on this coin. This coin is worth around $1,000,000.
  • 1903 Ultra-High-Relief Double Eagle: This rare gold coin is known for its beauty and aesthetic appeal. This gorgeous coin was actually a Pattern issue, which was minted to see the design given by the renowned designer Augustus St. Gaudens. The estimated worth of this rare gold coin is $3,000,000. It is one of the most popular numismatic gold coins in the world.
  • 1822 Half Eagle: With an estimated value of $5,000,000 in 2009, this rare gold coin is one of three gold coins of its kind known to exist today. Two of these three are permanent residents within the National Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian Institution. It is known to be one of the greatest rarities of US coins. Half eagle refers to the face value of the coin being $5.
  • 1906 Barber Double Eagle Pattern: This extremely rare gold coin was struck as an experiment during the Colonial Era. This gold coin has been estimated to be priceless! This coin depicts the Liberty head with a slave cap on the obverse side while standing Liberty with an eagle on the reverse.
  • 1787 Brasher Doubloon: These are simply one of the rarest and the most desirable US gold coins. These rare gold coins have been deemed priceless. One side of this rare coin depicts an eagle with a shield and the initials (EB) of the designer. The other side portrays the sunrise over the mountains.
